Perched gracefully on the southwestern shores of Lake Trasimeno in Umbria, Castiglione del Lago is a town that effortlessly blends history, beauty, and Italian charm. Dorota and I arrived with Monty in tow, eager to explore its medieval streets and take in the sweeping views of the tranquil lake. From the moment we stepped into its cobblestone lanes, the town revealed itself as a place where every corner tells a story.

Once an island, Castiglione del Lago retains a captivating sense of history. Its well-preserved medieval centre is framed by ancient walls and three grand gates, each whispering tales of centuries past. We wandered through the piazzas, where locals sat sipping espresso and the gentle rhythm of daily life flowed undisturbed. Monty, of course, was the star of every passerby’s attention, prancing happily alongside us, occasionally planting himself firmly to inspect a particularly interesting scent or direct us toward the next intriguing alley.
The town’s landmarks are unforgettable. The Rocca del Leone, a majestic castle rising above the town, offered breathtaking panoramas of Lake Trasimeno and the rolling Umbrian countryside. We climbed its ramparts, Monty happily perched in his Monty Truck while Dorota and I soaked in the views, the lake shimmering in the afternoon sun. The Palazzo della Corgna, elegant and imposing, provided another glimpse into the grandeur of Castiglione’s history, and we spent hours exploring its ornate courtyards and hidden corners, imagining the lives of those who once walked these halls.
Beyond the architecture, Castiglione del Lago delights the senses. The aroma of fresh bread and local cuisine drifted from trattorias tucked along quiet lanes, tempting us to pause and savour Umbrian flavours. Dorota’s laughter mingled with Monty’s excited little barks as he explored shaded courtyards, chased a few curious birds, and occasionally reminded us that a stroll is best enjoyed at his pace.

Every step through this town is an experience — from wandering narrow alleys to strolling the lakefront, where the sunlight dances on the water, reflecting the vibrant hues of the surrounding hills. Here, history, nature, and everyday life converge, creating moments that linger in memory long after you leave.
Whether you’re captivated by medieval walls, shimmering waters, or charming piazzas, Castiglione del Lago invites you to slow down, explore, and delight in its beauty. With Dorota at my side and Monty leading the way — sometimes gently, sometimes with playful insistence — every stroll became more than sightseeing; it became a story of shared discovery, laughter, and the simple joys of travelling through a truly enchanting corner of Italy.
