First Sunshine of the Year — A Sunday Morning Walk in Tychy

A Sunday morning walk in Tychy — that’s what we set out on this particular day, and it turned out to be one of the most uplifting outings of the year so far. There’s something almost ceremonial about the first truly sunny day of the year. You’ve waited through the grey weeks, the cold mornings, and the skies that promised nothing – and Sunday Morning Walk in Tychyhen one Sunday it simply arrives. Warm, golden, unhurried.

Sunday Morning Walk in Tychy

This was the day for us in Tychy. We set out on a Sunday morning with no particular plan — just a camera, a dog, and the pull of the light. The paths through the park were quiet, still carrying that early-morning stillness before the rest of the world woke up. Long shadows stretched across the track, and the trees, finally dressed in fresh green, glowed against a deep blue sky.

We wandered down to the water — the reservoir stretching out flat and calm, mirroring the sky almost perfectly. A lone kayak drifted slowly in the distance, a small red accent in all that blue and green. There were ducks, reeds at the water’s edge, and the sound of birdsong that you only really hear when everything else falls quiet.

It’s easy to overlook a place like Tychy when you’re used to it. But on mornings like this, when the light is right and you’re paying attention, there’s a real beauty in these familiar paths and open skies. This gallery is a reminder of that — of what it feels like when winter finally lets go.

What Makes Tychy Worth Walking

Tychy may not be the first name that comes to mind for scenic walks in Poland, but those who know it know better. The city sits at the edge of the Upper Silesian conurbation, and yet within minutes of stepping off the main roads, you find yourself in green corridors that feel genuinely removed from urban life. Parks, woodland paths, and the sprawling Paprocany reservoir give Tychy a generous natural character that rewards those willing to explore on foot.

On our Sunday morning walk in Tychy, we took the paths that skirt the reservoir — a route we have walked many times before, but one that never quite looks the same twice. In May, with the leaves still bright and new, the treeline was almost luminous. Reflections in the water were so clear that at times the surface and the sky seemed interchangeable.

The Light That Made the Difference on Our Sunday Morning Walk in Tychy

Photography and walking share something important: both reward patience and timing. We have walked this same circuit on overcast days in November, and while it has its own quiet mood in those conditions, nothing compares to the quality of spring morning light in a place like this. The low angle of the sun in early May creates long shadows and a warm golden tone that makes even ordinary objects – a bench, a wooden jetty, and a line of poplars – look considered and beautiful.

That quality of light was the defining element of this particular Sunday morning walk in Tychy. Every photograph we took in that first hour felt effortless, because the light was doing the heavy work. We simply had to be present and pay attention.

This walk also inspired a song. We wrote a track to capture the mood of that morning — you can listen to it on Monty Sounds, or stream it directly on SoundCloud.
