Wheels and Winds: A Seaside Holiday in Kołobrzeg

Our recent trip to Kołobrzeg was the kind of journey that invites you to slow down, breathe, and notice the details that usually slip by. With Dorota setting a leisurely pace and Monty snug in his custom trailer—the beloved Monty Truck—we cycled through quiet streets, along the promenade, and across windswept dunes, letting the rhythm of the town and the sea dictate our steps… and wheels.

Monty, ever the intrepid scout, proved that even the smallest traveller can have the largest curiosity. Every unfamiliar scent was a mission, every fluttering gull a potential adversary—or at least a worthy distraction. At one point, a particularly brave seagull swooped close enough to warrant a suspicious growl from him, followed by a triumphant bark when Dorota and I reassured him that the sky-bound interloper posed no threat. In Monty’s eyes, the beach was less a stretch of sand and more a kingdom waiting to be explored—each dune a hill to conquer, each tide pool a potential wonder.

The town itself seemed to hum with gentle activity. Fishermen worked at the harbour with the quiet patience of those who understand the sea, while tourists and locals alike ambled along the waterfront, caught in the shared leisure of summer afternoons. Dorota would point out small details: the way a patch of sunlight hit the weathered wood of a jetty, the slow curl of a wave against the pier, or a cluster of colourful kites wobbling in the breeze. These were moments easily missed if you’re in a rush, but here, they demanded attention, and we obliged.

Cycling along the promenade, the salty wind tousling our hair, I found myself thinking that travel is often measured in memories rather than miles. The creak of the Monty Truck’s wheels, the occasional patter of Monty’s tiny paws against the fabric, and the distant cries of gulls all blended into a soundtrack that felt uniquely Kołobrzeg. Pauses were frequent and intentional: a café stop for coffee and fresh pastries, a brief sit on a bench while Monty nosed at the sand, even a spontaneous detour down a quiet cobbled lane to admire the pastel facades and iron balconies that seemed to have stories tucked behind every shutter.

As the afternoon waned, we found a stretch of nearly deserted beach. Monty was released from his trailer and instantly became a whirlwind of energy, darting between the surf and the dunes, while Dorota and I walked barefoot along the edge of the water, the sun casting long, golden reflections on the wet sand. Each wave that lapped at our feet seemed to slow time, each gust of wind a reminder that the simplest moments—light, movement, presence—can feel profound.

By the time we pedalled back toward our accommodation, the sky was painted with shades of rose and lavender, the kind of colours that linger in memory long after they’ve faded from the horizon. Monty, exhausted but blissful, snoozed contentedly in the Monty Truck, while Dorota and I exchanged the quiet satisfaction of a day fully savoured. Kołobrzeg had offered no dramatic spectacles, no sweeping panoramas, but something far more enduring: the gentle joy of moving slowly, observing, and celebrating the little wonders that make travel unforgettable.
